Your Power, Superhero

What power would you possess if you were a superhero?  Everyone has their favorite:  be invisible, fly, freeze, climb, be lightning fast. Superhero movies and paraphernalia fetches billions and billions of dollars. We are drawn to its narrative of the natural becoming supernatural.  Our inner most being is drawn to the possibilities becoming the superhero we were created to be.

Moses final act was to climbed Mount Nebo and die. Before departing, he laid his hands on Joshua and departed his power into him. Joshua then led the Israelites out of the wilderness with wisdom and power.

Elijah was going to be taken up by the Lord.  Before he ascended, he asked his beloved student, Elisha, what he desired. Elisha requested double the power of what Elijah had. Suddenly a chariot of fire swooped up Elijah. He dropped his power filled cape and Elisha grabbed it and performed double the amount of miracles Elijah had done.

When Jesus was about to ascend to heaven as his final act on earth, he told his disciples as their graduating commencement address from disciples to apostles:

“And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.” And he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them. While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven.  Luke 24:29 (bold, italicize, and underline added)

As Elisha’s power was in the cape or mantle of Elijah, Jesus said he would clothe them and us. The reason He could not clothe them there is because the church historically would have made a monument of them and declared only the disciples/apostles would be the only ones able to be clothed with power.  Thus, modern day believers would be void of possessing His power.

Yet, Jesus knew to wait until the early church as a whole would be gathered – young and old, men and women – to suddenly fill His church:

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only nine in the morning! No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:

“‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke. The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord. And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. Acts 2:1-21

Like Elisha, I want more. I have never been shy of wanting more especially when it comes to food.  Moses dispensing his power to Joshua and Elijah dispensing his power to Elisha is a foreshadow of Jesus and the church.  Where is the more?  If Jesus is dispensing more power, I want more.  Has He promised more for the believer to take up their ‘cape’ and use His power? Yes!

Jesus gave us a promise we would be able to do more than He did:

Anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father. You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it, so that the Son can bring glory to the Father. Yes, ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it! John 14:12

We are not natural beings. We are supernatural beings. We are spirit beings who live in a body.  Jesus wants us to be filled with His Spirit to operate supernaturally to expand His Kingdom..  Jesus said we will do more than He if we believe in Him.

God did not send his Son, the bold Lion of the Tribe of Judah, Jesus Christ, to create a weak church. He did not die a gruesome death on a cross for a church who could arrive safely at death. He died to make us dangerous. The early church was dangerous. The world would say ‘These men who have caused trouble all over the world have now come here.’ (Acts 17:6)

Be filled with the Holy Spirit. Be indued with His power. He wants to fill you. Be open, be filled, and begin to operate as the superhero God has created you to be to change lives by bringing them to the Lordship of Jesus Christ.  Let us remember the final culmination of the powerful impartation of the Holy Spirit upon the early church:

And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. Acts 2:21
