Every artist name their creation. After the final stroke is made, the final chapter is written, or the pottery is dry, the artist have names for their creation. Naming the piece represents as a whole the work of art.
Naming a child is or should be a long thoughtful process. Every detail from initials to spelling is carefully given due diligence. Names are powerful as the work of art is summed by a name.
Changing names for new identities are found throughout the Bible. God never named a person by who they were but who they were to become. Abram was later named Abraham. Jacob to Israel. Hadassah to Esther. Simon to Peter. All embraced their new found place in God’s purpose.
God himself says once we go from our temporary home to our new home, Heaven, He will give us a new name. Why? Because we will be made new again.
Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give that person a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it. Revelation 2:17
In our family, our last name or the first letter is displayed everywhere. The reason is for most of our children obtaining our last name was not easy. Getting mine and Karen’s last name is cherished and was hard fought to achieve.
Six of our kids had to anxiously wait an extraordinarily long time to get there new name. Due to legal issues and prolonged court calendars, it took what seemed forever. When they were finally and legally changed, there were long exhales of exhaustion followed by celebrations.
Naming our children were of utmost importance to us. Some we chose to keep their name or change the spelling. Others chose to change their names and found their new name. Each of their names were kept or changed with a purpose.
Their new names are part of their new identity. It was part of embracing their new identity. Jair is He shines. Jacob means may God protect. Kaylyn and Karena, a form of Karen, both mean pure. Jadon is thankful. Joshua means the saving God is generous. Kristina is a form of Christian, follow of Christ.
Like God, each one of our children are named for our desire for their future. Our prayer is they will all be pure and thankful light-bearing followers of Christ proclaiming salvation which is only found in Christ.
God believes in you, has a purpose of you, and has given you a new name. He does not look at your past. He looks at your future and what you will become.
You have been adopted by God.
So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Daddy, Father.” Romans 8:15
You are now a child of the King of Kings. Being a son or daughter of the King does not lead you to a life as a pauper. It makes you a prince or princess. Royalty.
Embrace your new identity as a child of God and God has your Father. He is not mad at you. He is madly in love with you. You are His child. No matter how good or bad your earthly parents were at parenting, God your Father is far greater. On the best of day of Parent of the Year, God your Father is much more than that! He is the best father!
