In a recent conversation with one of our team members here at LWIC, I was sharing about the importance of baking your own bread. Sometimes in ministry, we run on the crumbs of the ministry – eating the leftovers of what has been distributed to the masses. We must learn the importance of baking our own bread and seeking the Lord with our own heart.
The tide of popularity turned against David in 1 Samuel 30. His men, bitter by the death of their sons and daughters slaughtered by an enemy, were looking to stone him. After they had wept and grieved, their grieving turned into anger and death toward their leader.
A powerful moment had to take place. He could not rely on his friends for support. His family had been taken captive. His total support system was gone. He had to encourage himself in the Lord.
And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the LORD his God. 1 Samuel 30:6
There are often going to be times in your life when your pastor will not be able to be there. Your friends will be busy. Your church will not be meeting that particular evening. What are you going to have to do? Encourage yourself in the Lord.
Turn on your own worship music, have your own night of worship, and encourage yourself in the Lord. Open up the word of God, preach to yourself, and encourage yourself in the Lord. Pray, worship, fast, then worship again. Do whatever it takes to encourage yourself in the Lord.
There will be times when you will not feel like blessing the Lord. Around you, people are wanting to hold their own stoning service yet you will have to command your soul to bless the Lord. Tell your soul you are going to worship the Lord no matter how it feels and get on board.
Bake your own bread. Put your own ingredients in the cake to nourish, improve, and get yourself to victory. I rather have God on my side than a thousand men. God plus you equals total and complete victory.
Again, bake your own bread. Encourage yourself in the Lord. Bring him into your situation and watch what you plus God can accomplish – victory!
