My social media is filled with so many people from many backgrounds. As a church leader, my timeline is filled with other church leaders as well as well meaning Christian believers. I am never perplexed when a Christian believers celebrate their belief and use of astrology. Sometimes, believers have never been taught about the dangers the Word of God and astrology. Yet, I am amazed at the number of leaders I see celebrating their birthdays and throwing their astrology sign out there.
Astrology is the ancient belief that a person’s destiny can be found in the pattern of the stars and planets at the time of one’s birth. The “horoscope” is the chart that attempts to describe that destiny. The fascination with astrology and horoscopes undoubtedly reflects people’s desire for wisdom beyond their own and direction for the future.
Isaiah the prophet spoke of astrologers with derision: “Let your astrologers come forward, those stargazers who make predictions month by month, let them save you from what is coming upon you” (Isaiah 47:13).
Divination was common among the pagan peoples of the Bible lands. When the Israelites were about to enter the Promised Land of Canaan, God warned them not to practice astrology. Deuteronomy 18:9, 12 & 14 NIV states plainly, “Do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nations there… The nations you will dispossess listen to those who practice sorcery or divination. But as for you, the Lord your God has not permitted you to do so… Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord.”
Divination is actually regarded to be a grave sin. 1 Samuel 15:23 NIV declared “Rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance like the evil of idolatry.”
Astrology is offensive to God because it attributes to planets and stars the power that belongs to God alone and because it tries to find the will of God by other means than God has appointed. Why would we as children of the Creator desire to find answers and directions in the created – the starts and planets?
Throughout the Bible, God tells us that He will guide us. He will lead us like the Good Shepherd and the Good Father He is. Cease from getting guidance or direction from creation and worship the Creator of the Creation. He sent his Son to reconcile Himself to us and call us sons and daughters of the Most High God and restored our authority and dominion over all creation . . .Yes, over all creation including the stars and the planets!
