If anyone does not offend in speech [never says the wrong things], he is a fully developed character and a perfect man, able to control his whole body and to curb his entire nature. James 3:2 AMPC.
My goal is perfection. It makes no sense to strive for anything less. I believe that the Bible challenges me to set perfection as my goal. A goal that is obtained by being in control of my tongue. When I control my tongue, then everything else, my entire nature, falls in line.
Let me break this down. If for the next ten minutes I control my tongue, then, for at least ten minutes I will be perfect. For the next ten minutes, I will not gossip, slander, or harm anyone with my words. I will not lie or shade the truth. I will speak only the truth and do so with love. I will convey no false impressions. If I speak, my words will be uplifting and positive. My countenance will be one of affection and encouragement. My demeanor will be calm and peace-loving. My words will be both supportive and challenging. For ten minutes the words of my mouth and the thoughts of my heart will please God.
If so far, I haven’t offended anyone, then maybe… just maybe… well, on second thought, I think I’ll try to hold my breath for five minutes.
“Those who guard their mouths and their tongues keep themselves from calamity.” Proverbs 21:23 NIV
